Te Puawai Newsletter Term 2

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back for term 2. We have a long but busy term ahead.  This term we are fortunate to have a trainee teacher in our class. Samual Heihei is a year 2 student from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiarangi and will be joining us for the next 6 weeks. The children are looking forward to having Samual in our class, and I’m sure he will be of benefit to the students.

Unfortunately we farewelled Wini at the end of last term. It was sad to see her go, but we wish her well in her future adventures. This leaves our class with 27 year 4 and 5 students.

This year our topic focus continues to be  “Globalisation.” To continue this topic, we will be focussing on Geohazards. Our class has enrolled in an online virtual field trip with LEARNZ going to the beautiful Marlborough, one of New Zealand’s many geologically active areas. Much of our topic will be included into our literacy programme.

We will be continuing with our literacy programme “The Daily 5”. The students have been enjoying have the flexibility in their learning and have shown excellence and  independency.

School fitness will be every Tuesday and Thursday. Students should come dressed appropriately. Our library day is Wednesday and students will be allowed to borrow one book, which will need to be returned before another one can be issued. Students are able to keep their library book for 2 weeks, in which they will then need to return the book or have it re-issued.

Home learning needs to be completed every day and will need to be handed in for marking each Friday. We have home learning rewards once a term for students who regularly complete their home learning. Home learning includes a variety of activities, such as reading, math and spelling.  Students who regularly complete home learning tend to do better at school, as this is an opportunity for students to further develop skills learnt at school.

We have started using google classroom for our home learning, with more than half the class participating in this. If your child is not currently doing the online home learning, but you would be interested in it, please let me know and I will set this up for you. The students have thoroughly enjoyed doing their home learning online thus far and it has shown an increase in motivation.
